Genesis – A Brief History

Genesis began life as Corduff Counselling Service which was established in 1993 as a community service by the Corduff Community Core Group in response to a need identified for local support for families in the Greater Blanchardstown Area and with the objective of providing confidential counselling to individuals and families in the Greater Blanchardstown Area.

The service commenced in 55A Corduff Grove in a premises shared with a community crèche. It provided psychotherapy on two evenings per week up to May 2001. It was recognised that a separate premises was required to provide a meaningful service. During 2000, the number of sessions delivered totalled 680 hours.

In 2006 the organisation became a limited company with charitable status, Genesis Psychotherapy & Family Therapy Service, “Genesis”, which was necessary if the potential growth was to be exploited.

In 2010 with the support of Sr. Regina King (who helped to create the service and was on the board of management), the Sacred Heart Convent on Blackcourt Road was acquired from the Sacre Coeur Order and Genesis moved into the premises. This was funded by a mortgage from Clann Credo and a National Lottery Grant to specifically assist the purchase. This acquisition was an enormous step in the progression of Genesis and allowed it to expand.

In 2018, Genesis converted 2 rooms to make them more child-friendly and started providing a Play Therapy service and also an outreach service to 2 local schools; a primary and secondary school. There has been a huge demand for the service since.

Today, Genesis provides a service to the huge and continuously-growing population of Dublin 15. Nowadays, Genesis regularly sees over 500 clients and provides over 4,500 psychotherapy sessions per year.
